Hydraulic platforms impress with their smooth running and lower maintenance requirements. Spindle platforms work particularly precisely and can be lowered directly from any lifting height - an advantage for work such as engine or gearbox removal. However, they require regular lubrication and a little more care.
2-post lifts for your workshop
Maximum freedom under the vehicle, high load capacity, precise synchronization - from OMCN, ATH-Heinl, TRUSTERS, Ravaglioli and others. a.
2-post lifts are the standard in passenger car and light commercial vehicle service. They allow free access to the underbody, wheels, front and rear - with short set-up times and high flexibility. The appropriate load capacity, arm geometry and design depend on the vehicle mix, the hall height and the condition of the floor. We rely on proven manufacturers such as OMCN, Consul, ATH-Heinl, TRUSTERS and Ravaglioli, who ensure safety, longevity and rapid profitability with robust steel constructions, reliable drive systems, precise synchronization and service-friendly design. We would be happy to provide you with personal advice – by phone or email.Which 2-post lift suits my workshop?
2-post lift is the universal standard for almost every workshop. They are ideal for service, repairs, work on the drive and exhaust, body repairs as well as tire and brake service. Their big advantage is the free access to the underbody and the vehicle doors. Thanks to their high stability and flexible plate arms, they are suitable for vehicles with short and long wheelbases - from small cars to light vans. Regardless of the load capacity and design, quality is crucial. Renowned manufacturers (e.g. Consul, ATH, Trusters) rely on robust steel constructions, precise synchronization of the lifting columns, reliable hydraulics or electromechanics and maintenance-friendly components. For you, high-quality workmanship means above all: safe operation, a long service life and a quick amortization of your investment. The best 2-post lift is the one that perfectly suits your vehicle mix, your space and your quality requirements.
What types of 2-post lifts are there?
Floor plate variant
Recommended for low hall heights or weaker floors. The floor frame connects the columns, accommodates cables and ensures stability - with minimal installation height required.
Barrier-free version (upper cross member/gallow)
If the hall height is sufficient, this variant offers free floor space between the columns, better passage and fewer tripping hazards for your tool trolley.
2-column stage with radio - not connected
With the radio version, both columns work independently and communicate with each other wirelessly - without any upper cross member or floor frame. This creates maximum freedom of movement and flexibility when setting up.How does a 2-post lift work?
Hydraulic drive
A hydraulic cylinder in each column lifts the pallet truck. Mechanical supports at different heights relieve the load on the cylinders - this increases service life and safety. The technology ensures smooth running and a quick lifting movement.
Spindle drive
The tried and tested classic from many European manufacturers: There is a spindle in each column on which lifting nuts run. When the motor rotates the spindle, the nuts move up or down - the pallet truck moves accordingly. A very precise, tried and tested technique that also allows subsequent correction.2-column lifts consist of two robust columns with support arms that grip the vehicle at defined pick-up points and lift it safely. Depending on the design (hydraulic or spindle), the drive takes place either via a hydraulic unit or an electric motor. Mechanical safety catches, synchronization and load safety valves ensure safe lifting and holding. You can find out which drive is better - hydraulic or spindle - and whether there is a decisive difference in practice in the following article.
Chassis & tires
Tires and wheels can be changed quickly because all wheels are freely accessible. At the same time, the free access to the underbody and wheel suspension enables precise braking and chassis work - for example on dampers, wishbones, drive shafts as well as brake discs and pads.
Drive & Motor
The underbody is always freely accessible - making this type of platform ideal for engine compartment work as well as the removal and installation of components such as the engine, battery, gearbox or cardan shaft. The platform also enables service work such as oil changes and underbody sealing as well as activities on the exhaust system - such as checking, loosening and replacing exhaust parts - ergonomically and safely.
Body & Inspection
Thanks to free access to the front and rear, this stage is ideal for working on bumpers, beams, lighting or other add-on parts. At the same time, the underbody remains completely accessible so that inspections as well as testing and maintenance work on the exhaust system, pipes, chassis and corrosion protection can be carried out ergonomically and safely.
More helpful questions
Do I need a foundation or is the existing concrete floor sufficient?
Yes: reinforced concrete C20/25, type 20-25 cm, is professionally reinforced. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s foundation plan. We will be happy to advise you.
What minimum ceiling height is required?
4 to 5 meters ceiling height is typical for barrier-free 2-post lifts. Models with a basic frame often have a slightly lower height. It is important that the roof of the raised vehicle cannot drive into the ceiling. Therefore, always check the technical data of the respective model and compare them with the actual hall height.
Which adapters and mounts make sense for SUVs, vans and EVs?
Low profile or telescopic arms, high rubber pads, pin/receiving plate sets, frame and sill adapters, specific pads for electric vehicles. We always recommend using vehicle-specific lifting points.
Which arm geometry makes sense?
Asymmetrical arms improve door clearance and make getting in easier. Telescopic arms increase the shooting radius and are particularly suitable for vehicles with a long wheelbase. Low profile arms allow deep sports cars to be lifted safely. Some electric vehicles also require special support arms with fork mounts that attach directly to the tires. An arm geometry that fits the respective mix of vehicles in the workshop is ideal.
What load capacity do I need for cars, SUVs and vans?
For cars, 3.0 t to 3.5 t is usually enough. 4.0 t is recommended for heavy SUVs/EVs. For light vans (e.g. Vito/Transporter) 4.0-4.5 t, for large panel vans up to 5.0 t. Always pay attention to the manufacturer's information, axle loads and adapters.
230V or 400V: Which connection makes sense?
A 400 V three-phase connection offers higher efficiency and sometimes faster lifting times - which is why it is standard in professional workshops. 230 V models are particularly suitable for smaller businesses or private areas, as the existing home electrical system is usually designed for this. Nevertheless, 230 V lifts can be used just as well in professional workshops if the lifting speed and performance meet the requirements.
What should you pay attention to in electric vehicles (EV)?
It is important to have a sufficient load reserve, manufacturer-specific mounting points and suitable rubber and pin adapters. The bottom of the battery should also be protected. Always follow the manufacturer's specifications and approvals: In some electric vehicles, the high-voltage battery uses the entire underbody. In these cases, special support arms are required that lift the vehicle directly by the wheels. In this article we go into the topic in more detail
How much pillar spacing and arm length for long wheelbases?
The longer the wheelbase of a vehicle, the more important it is to have large, telescopic arm reaches and a correspondingly wide pillar spacing, since such vehicles are usually wider than a standard car. Be sure to check the manufacturer's information and compare it with the actual vehicle lengths in the fleet. In such cases, a test assembly or a scaled sketch is highly recommended.
In Germany, an inspection according to DGUV regulations by a qualified person is required at least annually. In addition, regular visual and functional checks in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations are useful. Only qualified persons according to DGUV (with proven specialist knowledge) are allowed to carry out the annual test. The test protocol must be documented and stored.
Depending on the model, approx. 40-70 seconds to reach full lifting height. Factors: drive type (hydraulic/spindle), motor power, load capacity, supply (230V/400V) and temperature.
Manufacturers recommend daily/weekly: visual and functional check, check locks. Monthly/quarterly: Check lubrication (spindle/pallet truck guide), chains/cables. Annually: DGUV inspection by a qualified person, check wearing parts and oil level (hydraulics).
Required are assembly and operating instructions, an EC/EU declaration of conformity and a test book in accordance with the applicable regulations.
Use approved heavy-duty anchors according to the manufacturer's instructions (diameter, embedment depth, edge distances). The subsurface must be stable, free of cracks and sufficiently strong. The anchors can be screwed in or glued in. You can find the corresponding fastening material in our shop.
Depending on the model, typically 16 A slow (400V) or C 20 (230V), separate circuit, FI/RCD as specified, correct conductor cross-section and proper grounding. Always follow the manufacturer's connection diagram and local regulations.
With hydraulic lifts, synchronization takes place either via steel cables or via a master-slave system. In the case of spindle lifts, synchronization is usually achieved using a chain, a height compensation rope with a limit switch function or a modern electronic control system with sensors. Advanced models without a fixed cable connection between the columns communicate via an electronic synchronization control using a secure radio connection. Regular checks and adjustments ensure an even stroke and prevent skewing.
Use the hydraulic oil specified in the manual (e.g. HLP 32/46, depending on temperature range). Filling quantity according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check the oil level regularly when the platform is lowered and change the filter/oil according to the maintenance schedule.
A 12 to 24 month guarantee against material and manufacturing defects is usual. Wear parts – such as rubber pads or support nuts – are generally excluded. The prerequisites for the guarantee are professional installation, intended use and timely maintenance. The scope and length of the guarantee depends on the manufacturer. Search for the information on your desired item.
For very low vehicles, low-profile arms, flat rubber pads and, if necessary, slightly raising the vehicle using ramps or wheel chocks are suitable. For vehicles with pronounced side sills, it is recommended to increase the mounting points using suitable adapters so that the support arms do not hit the sills and only the lifting points approved by the manufacturer are used.
As a rule, you receive the platform with the unit, arms/receptacles, rubber pads, anchors/mounting kit, documentation/CE documents; Hydraulic oil and electrical connection are often optional.
Only if the manufacturer approves this and corrosion protection, weather protection (roof/cover), IP-protected electrics and suitable flooring are met. Check corrosion points regularly and shorten maintenance intervals.
Due to the two pillars, doors and sills are partially blocked, which means that work on doors, side sills or side body parts is only possible to a limited extent or is significantly more difficult.
By default no, as 2-post lifts are not designed for wheel alignment. With special wheel alignment stands, such as B. the OMCN Art. 371, however, a wheel alignment can be made possible.
