Balancing Weights: Selection, Quality and Usage Tips
Balancing weights seem trivial, but are critical for smooth driving behaviour. Incorrect weight classes, dirty adhesive surfaces or poor-quality adhesive on adhesive weights cause weights to fall off – and then all the balancing work is undone. Quality pays even with consumables.
How do adhesive weights differ from clip-on weights?
Clip-on weights are clamped to the rim edge. They're quick to mount, but not suitable for sensitive alloy rims due to the mechanical stress on the rim edge. Adhesive weights are glued onto the clean, grease-free inside of the rim. They're invisible from the outside and protect the rim surface. Modern adhesive weights with good adhesive strips hold reliably even in heat, cold and with tyre cleaners.
What to do if an adhesive weight doesn't stick?
The most common cause of poor adhesion is an insufficiently cleaned adhesive surface. First remove all grease and silicone residues from the rim (use brake cleaner), dry the surface completely and warm it slightly if necessary. Then firmly press the adhesive weight and hold for a few minutes. At ambient temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, adhesive weights are harder to fix – if necessary, pre-warm the rim and weight.
