Hydraulic Oil for Lifts: What You Should Know About Quality and Selection
Hydraulic oil is the "blood" of every lift with a hydraulic lifting system. It transfers pressure from the hydraulic unit to the cylinders and simultaneously lubricates all moving parts of the hydraulic system. Low-quality or unsuitable oil can lead to leaks, corrosion and premature wear.
Which viscosity classes are used for lifts?
The most common hydraulic oils for lifts are in the viscosity range ISO VG 32 to ISO VG 68. For normal workshop temperatures ISO VG 46 is usually the standard. In very cold operating conditions a thinner oil (ISO VG 32) may be advisable. The exact specification can be found in your lift's operating manual – always follow it.
How often should hydraulic oil be changed?
For regularly used lifts most manufacturers recommend an oil change every one to two years, with more intensive use even more frequently. Signs that an oil change is needed are dark discolouration of the oil, an unpleasant smell or slower lifting speed. A regular oil change is significantly cheaper than a hydraulic pump repair.
