Balancing Weights: Types, Selection and Workshop Use
A correctly balanced wheel is essential for smooth driving behaviour and protects the tyre, rim, wheel bearing and the entire axle geometry from premature wear. Even a few grams of imbalance produce noticeable vibrations at cruising speed. The right choice of balancing weight is crucial for a clean result.
Adhesive weights or clip-on weights – what fits?
Clip-on weights are clamped to the inside of the rim edge and are the classic choice for steel rims. They're easy to mount and very cost-effective. Adhesive weights are glued with adhesive film to the inside of alloy rims. They don't leave scratches and are the only recommendable solution for high-quality light alloy rims. For motorcycles, special narrow adhesive weights are available.
How many grams difference is still acceptable?
As a rule of thumb: for car tyres, the remaining residual imbalance after balancing should be below 5 grams, preferably below 3 grams. For higher-quality vehicles or sensitive suspensions, a residual imbalance of a maximum of 1 gram is recommended. The balancing machine indicates the required gram value – the balancing weights must correspond as precisely as possible to this value.
