EV Lifts: What You Must Consider When Lifting Electric Vehicles
Lifting electric vehicles differs in some important ways from lifting conventional vehicles. The high-voltage battery sits in the vehicle floor in most EVs and must neither be mechanically damaged nor incorrectly loaded. Wrong lifts or wrong lifting points can damage the battery – with potentially very costly consequences.
Which lifts are suitable for electric vehicles?
In principle 2-post lifts and scissor lifts are suitable for EVs – provided the lifting supports (arm pads) are correctly positioned at the lifting points specified by the manufacturer. Special EV adapter pads protect the vehicle sill and ensure the battery is not loaded. Some manufacturers recommend special plates for certain EVs.
Do I need special training for lifting electric vehicles?
For work on the high-voltage system of an EV a special HV qualification is required. For simple service work such as the equivalent of oil changes, tyre fitting and brake work where the HV system is not touched, awareness of lifting points and handling of EVs is sufficient.
