Working under a vehicle that is only held by a floor jack is life-threatening. Floor jacks can inadvertently lower – mechanically or through vibration. Axle stands permanently bear the weight of the vehicle and make working under it safe. This rule applies not only to professionals but to anyone who works under a car.
What load capacity do my axle stands need?
For cars, axle stands with at least 2 to 3 tonnes load capacity per stand are recommended – depending on the vehicle's centre of gravity. For vans and light trucks there should be at least 5 tonnes. For heavy HGVs and buses, axle stands with 10 to 20 tonnes load capacity are required. Always use in pairs – the vehicle should be safely positioned on at least two axle stands.
How are axle stands used correctly?
First raise the vehicle to the desired height with the floor jack. Position the axle stands at the support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer (indicated in the vehicle handbook). Adjust the axle stand to the appropriate height and lower the vehicle slowly until it rests securely on the stands. Check the secure fit before going under the vehicle. Release the floor jack but leave it nearby as an additional safeguard.
