Single-acting vs. double-acting hydraulic cylinders
Single-acting cylinders generate force in one direction only – return is by load, gravity or spring. Ideal for lifting, support and clamping tasks. Double-acting cylinders generate active force in both directions: for controlled pushing and pulling, such as positioning tonne-heavy components in steel mills or shipbuilding, or straightening truck frames.
Typical applications in industry & maintenance
In bridge construction, single-acting cylinders with safety lock nuts lift complete bridge segments – once the target height is reached, the mechanical nut locks the load safely and hydraulic pressure can be released.
